The Original Toes

Building Toes Step by Step

Wagtail: The custom built Hunter S. Johnston to reproduce Toes, a Billy Johnston boat from the 1950s

If you can dream it, we can build it.

Maybe it was the fine lines of a beauty at a classic show that caught your eye and held you, transfixed. Or maybe you have fond memories of the woody your Grandparents first let you drive. Here is a sample of our custom boat work, built from scratch, and with love. For more, see our Gallery of Custom Builds.

Custom Builds. Historic Reproductions. A one-of-a-kind blend of the best known as a Hunter S. Johnston.

We can re-create a boat from years gone by, build to your specifications, or suggest a combination of the historic and the truly one-of-a-kind. We have double paddle canoes (originally built by Henry Rushton from Canton, New York) and are putting the final touches right now on a 23′ launch that is reminiscent of Billy Johnston’s boatbuilding style. He started making rowboats with his uncle in 1910 when he was just 19. He worked right through the Dispro years of 1914 to 1926 and then he started Port Carling Boatworks with partners. That’s where he started SeaBirD and then he went on his own in the 1950s. Johnston passed away a decade later.
